Registering a birth.

Under the Births and Deaths Registration Act of 1953, parents have a legal duty to register the birth of a new baby, this must be done within 42 days of the birth.

The birth must be registered in the registration district that the birth took place.

The following information will be required;

  • The date and place of birth.
  • Sex of the baby.
  • The forenames and surname that the baby will be brought up with.
  • Parents details, name, date and place of birth, occupation.
  • If the mother is not married, she is not normally obliged to have the fathers details registered.
  • If the parents are married the reistrar will ask for the date of the marriage.
  • The number of children the mother has with her present husband and any previous husband.

Be sure to telephone the relevant register office and make an appointment with a registrar, the Portsmouth office opening times are 9.00am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday, other offices may vary.
